In 2000, Shanghai experienced a pivotal transformation as it embraced globalization, becoming a key financial and cultural center amidst rapid urbanization and economic growth. This development brought challenges, such as increased inequality, environmental issues, and community displacement.
The Old City, dating back to the 16th century, remained a cultural heart featuring traditional architecture, including the notable Yuyuan Garden.
Despite modernization efforts, the Old City preserved many aspects of Chinese culture, navigating a complex balance between maintaining heritage and accommodating new infrastructure and commercial demands.
