HAIPHONG, der Hafen des französischen Protektorats Tongking, liegt am anderen Ende des Golfs von Tong-king, am Cua-Cam, 90 Minuten vom Meer und 8229 Meilen von Marseille entfernt. Die Einwohnerzahl beträgt etwa 75.000, davon sind 15.000 Franzosen und Chinesen.

In der Regel wurde das Fotografieren zu dieser Zeit von professionellen Fotografen durchgeführt, da für den Prozess die Einrichtung schwerer und voluminöser Geräte erforderlich war. Die geringe Empfindlichkeit des Films erforderte zudem eine lange Belichtungszeit.
