In the area of the Bund in Shanghai, many foreign countries established their offices in the waterfront of Huangpu River. From the 1840’s to the 1930’s banks, headquarters buildings, and consulates were constructed. It was the beginning of the prosperity of the old Shanghai and its legend.
With an analog film in black and white, this photo was taken in early 2000, at the beginning of the China globalization. It shows an ancient theater with a typical Art Deco Entrance decoration. Its name came be guessed – New Year.
At that time, people were still using bicycle as main vehicle.

The period of year 2000 marked a pivotal moment for Shanghai as it embraced globalization, transforming into a major financial and cultural center while dealing with the complexities of rapid urbanization and economic growth. With rapid economic development came challenges, including increased inequality, environmental issues, and the displacement of communities due to urban development projects.
The Old City dates back to the 16th century and was once the heart of Shanghai. It features traditional architecture, including classical Chinese gardens, temples, and tea houses. The Yuyuan Garden, a famous classical garden, remains a centerpiece of cultural heritage within the Old City.
Despite the ongoing modernization of Shanghai, the Old City retained many traditional aspects of Chinese culture and life, in a complex balance between preservation and development, as many traditional neighborhoods faced demolition to make way for modern infrastructure and commercial projects.
